Cars For Christmas

Cars For Christmas

Before I rant, let me start by saying I’m Jewish…in case you don’t know. During the holidays, I like to say that I have my own brand of faith – Jews For Christmas. It goes beyond the traditional Xmas eve dinner celebration of movies and Chinese food. I like the decorations…I like the family time….I like the festive atmosphere…and the list goes on.

As you see, there are a lot of things I like about Christmas. Unfortunately,  there are also a lot of things that I don’t like about Christmas. What I don’t like most about Christmas can be nicely summarized in all those obnoxious car commercials. You know the ones where someone gets a car for as present, complete with a really huge bow. Someone needs to explain exactly WTF receiving a $75,000 car has to do with celebrating what is supposed to be a holy-day, not just a holiday. Nobody ever offered me a car for Rosh Hashanah; just challah, gelfite fish and brisket.

Without sounding too preachy (especially because I am Jewish), I wonder what Jesus would think if he were to return and see his day being celebrated in this manner. Not only is this rampant capitalism, to me it shows an utter lack of understanding of the true meaning of Christmas, and not just to Christians…and I should know. After all, Jesus was Jewish.
