Hit Reply All…Sometimes

I’m sometimes wonder if people do things just to piss me off. Well not me, but they do it just to piss off other people in general.

So far today I have received 3 responses to emails that were sent just to me, even though there were other people on the original email. In one email, I even went so far as to tell the recipient I was cc-ing the person looking for the updated information. So what does she do? Responds to me and just me. Please, I’m begging you…just hit reply all.

Of course, there is the opposite of that, which is even more annoying – the dreaded “open” email. You know what I’m talking about. Someone you know (and wish you didn’t) sends out an email to his/hers entire mailing list and doesn’t use blind carbon copy (bcc). Everybody and their grandmother is on this email, exposing your email address to hundreds of people you don’t know and you don’t want to know. Of course, the inevitable happens and one of those hundreds of people you don’t want to know hits reply all. If you are lucky, it’s just or two but sometimes it’s just like dominoes. One falls and all the others keep falling, and you get emails from all those people you don’t want to know and don’t want to know what their response is.

A couple of weeks ago, I got an email from someone who did exactly that. Sent out an open email to 400+ recipients. Luckily the only email response I got was someone I actually did know who stated that he was going to be “really pissed” if he got any responses, which we didn’t. Just validated my opinion that most folks ignore this guy as much as I try to, but that’s a story for another day. One which will be sent bcc.
